What Is a Clean Sheet in Football? Meaning, Rules and Records
What is a clean sheet in football? Learn what a clean sheet means, whether a 0-0 draw counts, how extra time and penalties affect it, and why clean sheets matter.

Goals receive most of the attention in football, but preventing them can be just as important. One of the most common ways of measuring defensive success is the clean sheet â a statistic regularly used when evaluating goalkeepers, defenders and entire teams.
The concept is simple, but several situations can create confusion. Does a 0-0 draw count as a clean sheet? What happens if a goalkeeper is substituted? Does extra time count? And can a goalkeeper still keep a clean sheet if penalties are scored during a shootout?
Understanding these distinctions makes the statistic much more useful than simply treating every match without a conceded goal in the same way.
What Does a Clean Sheet Mean in Football?
A clean sheet in football means that a team finishes a match without conceding a goal during the period of play included in the result.
Examples include:
- 1-0;
- 2-0;
- 3-0;
- 0-0.
In each case, at least one team has conceded zero goals.
The term is most closely associated with goalkeepers because they are the final line of defence, but a clean sheet is fundamentally a team achievement. Defenders, midfielders and forwards can all contribute through pressing, positioning, interceptions and ball retention.
A goalkeeper can make ten saves and keep a clean sheet, or face no shots on target at all. The statistical result is the same even though the performances may have been very different.
Does a 0-0 Draw Count as a Clean Sheet?
Yes. A 0-0 draw counts as a clean sheet for both teams.
Neither side has conceded, so both have fulfilled the basic requirement.
This sometimes causes confusion because clean sheets are associated with successful defensive performances, while a goalless draw may feel less significant than a 1-0 victory. The result of the match, however, does not determine whether a clean sheet has been recorded.
| Result | Home Team Clean Sheet? | Away Team Clean Sheet? |
|---|---|---|
| 0-0 | Yes | Yes |
| 1-0 | Yes | No |
| 0-2 | No | Yes |
| 3-0 | Yes | No |
| 2-2 | No | No |
A team therefore does not need to win to keep a clean sheet.
Why Is It Called a Clean Sheet?
The expression comes from the traditional practice of recording match information on paper.
If a team conceded no goals, the section of the scorekeeper's sheet used to record goals against that team remained blank â or "clean."
Over time, the expression became part of football vocabulary and eventually developed into a standard statistical term.
The phrase is particularly common in British football terminology and has spread internationally through English-language coverage of the sport.
In some countries and statistical contexts, expressions such as shutout may be used instead, although "clean sheet" is the standard football term in much of the world.
Who Gets Credit for a Clean Sheet?
At team level, the answer is straightforward: if a side concedes no goals, it has kept a clean sheet.
Individual goalkeeper statistics can be more complicated.
A goalkeeper who plays the entire match without conceding will normally receive credit for the clean sheet. However, when multiple goalkeepers appear in the same game, the way individual clean sheets are recorded can depend on the competition or statistical provider.
For example, suppose a goalkeeper plays 70 minutes with the score at 2-0 and is then substituted. The replacement plays the final 20 minutes and the match finishes 2-0.
The team clearly kept a clean sheet. Whether the starting goalkeeper, replacement or both receive individual statistical credit depends on the rules used by the relevant competition or data provider.
This is one reason team and goalkeeper clean-sheet statistics should not always be treated as interchangeable.
Do Extra Time and Penalty Shootouts Count for a Clean Sheet?
Extra time can affect a clean sheet, while penalty shootouts are normally treated separately from the match score.
Does Extra Time Count?
Yes. If a knockout match goes to extra time, goals scored during those additional 30 minutes form part of the match.
Suppose the score is 0-0 after 90 minutes but Team A scores during extra time:
After 90 minutes: Team A 0-0 Team B
After extra time: Team A 1-0 Team B
Team A finishes without conceding, while Team B does not.
A side that keeps the opponent scoreless for 90 minutes but concedes in extra time therefore does not complete the full match with a clean sheet.
Does a Penalty Shootout Ruin a Clean Sheet?
Normally, goals scored in a penalty shootout do not count as goals conceded during the match itself.
If a knockout game finishes 0-0 after extra time and one team wins the shootout 5-4, the match score remains 0-0, with the shootout used to determine which team advances.
Shootout penalties are therefore not added to normal goals-for and goals-against totals. A goalkeeper can finish the match without conceding during regular or extra time even if several penalties are scored against them in the shootout.
Penalties taken during normal play or extra time are different. If one of those penalties is scored, the team has conceded a goal and cannot keep a clean sheet.
Why Are Clean Sheets Important in Football?
Clean sheets matter because conceding zero goals guarantees that a team cannot lose during normal match play.
If the team scores once while keeping a clean sheet, it wins. If it fails to score, it still secures a draw in a league match.
This makes defensive consistency particularly valuable across a long season. A team does not need to produce several goals every week if it can regularly limit opponents to zero or one.
Clean sheets can indicate several positive qualities:
- disciplined defensive organization;
- effective pressing;
- strong goalkeeper performance;
- good control of possession;
- successful protection of dangerous areas;
- effective defending of set pieces.
However, the statistic should not be interpreted in isolation. Two clean sheets can represent completely different performances.
A team that allows 20 shots and survives because of exceptional goalkeeping has not defended in the same way as a team that prevents its opponent from creating any significant chances.
Are Clean Sheets a Good Measure of Goalkeeper Performance?
Clean sheets are useful, but they are not a complete measure of goalkeeper quality.
A goalkeeper depends heavily on the team in front of them. Someone playing behind an elite defence may face relatively few high-quality shots, while a goalkeeper at a weaker club may concede more often despite making difficult saves regularly.
Consider two hypothetical performances:
| Goalkeeper | Shots on Target Faced | Goals Conceded | Clean Sheet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goalkeeper A | 1 | 0 | Yes |
| Goalkeeper B | 9 | 1 | No |
The clean-sheet statistic favors Goalkeeper A, but it does not prove that A produced the better individual performance.
A team can also keep a clean sheet despite allowing several high-quality chances if the opponent finishes poorly, hits the post or encounters an exceptional goalkeeper. Conversely, a strong defensive performance can lose its clean sheet because of a single deflection or individual mistake.
More detailed analysis can therefore include save percentage, goals prevented, shots conceded, shots on target, expected goals against (xGA), big chances allowed, crosses claimed, distribution and performance in one-on-one situations.
These metrics help distinguish between the final outcome and the quality of the performance that produced it. Clean sheets are best understood as one part of goalkeeper and defensive analysis rather than a definitive ranking system.
What Is a Clean Sheet Percentage?
Clean sheet percentage measures the proportion of matches in which a team or goalkeeper concedes no goals.
The basic calculation is:
Clean sheet percentage = (Clean sheets Ă· Matches played) Ă 100
For example, if a goalkeeper records 15 clean sheets in 38 league appearances:
15 Ă· 38 Ă 100 = 39.5%
Their clean sheet percentage is therefore approximately 39.5%.
This can be more useful than raw totals when comparing players who have made different numbers of appearances.
A goalkeeper with 20 clean sheets from 60 matches has a lower clean-sheet rate than one with 18 from 40, despite having a higher total.
Competition strength, team quality and sample size still need to be considered before drawing conclusions.
What Is the Difference Between a Clean Sheet and a Shutout?
In football, clean sheet and shutout generally describe the same outcome: preventing the opponent from scoring.
"Clean sheet" is the conventional term in British and international football English. "Shutout" is more strongly associated with North American sports such as ice hockey, baseball and American football, although it can also appear in football coverage.
For football-specific writing and statistics, clean sheet is usually the more natural term.
What Is the Difference Between a Clean Sheet and Both Teams to Score?
A clean sheet and Both Teams to Score (BTTS) describe opposite scoring patterns.
A clean sheet means at least one team has conceded zero goals. BTTS means each team has scored at least once.
| Score | Clean Sheet? | Both Teams Scored? |
|---|---|---|
| 0-0 | Yes, both teams | No |
| 1-0 | Yes, home team | No |
| 0-1 | Yes, away team | No |
| 2-1 | No | Yes |
| 2-2 | No | Yes |
| 3-0 | Yes, home team | No |
Historical clean-sheet records can provide useful information about defensive performance, but they cannot determine what will happen in the next match.
A team may have several recent clean sheets because it faced weak attacks, benefited from outstanding goalkeeping or simply allowed opponents to miss good opportunities. Building a correct prediction requires additional context such as expected line-ups, opponent quality, home and away performance, injuries and the quality of chances created and conceded.
How Do Teams Keep More Clean Sheets?
Consistent clean sheets usually result from collective defensive performance rather than one outstanding goalkeeper.
The process often begins much further forward. Effective pressing can prevent opponents from progressing the ball comfortably, while good possession reduces the amount of time a team has to defend.
When opponents do advance, compact spacing between midfield and defence can restrict central passing lanes and force attacks into less dangerous areas.
Strong teams are also effective at controlling transitions. Many high-quality chances occur immediately after possession changes, when defensive structures are temporarily disorganized. Preventing or slowing these counterattacks can substantially reduce the goalkeeper's workload.
Set pieces matter as well. A team that defends well in open play can still lose a clean sheet through a corner, free kick or penalty.
The most consistent defensive sides therefore combine pressure on the ball, compact positioning, transition control, set-piece organization and reliable goalkeeping rather than depending on one particular strength.
