Bigger, Faster, Stronger: Why Sport and AI Are Both Obsessed with Exaggeration


Football has always had its own idea of the perfect body.

A centre-back should look as if he could head away from a refrigerator. A winger is expected to have the acceleration of a motorbike. The ideal goalkeeper seems to grow another ten centimetres whenever a cross enters the box.

We know real players are more complicated than that. Some great strikers are tall and powerful; others are small enough to disappear between two defenders. Speed helps, but so do timing, balance and the ability to notice a run half a second before everybody else.

Yet sport loves a simple physical story. Bigger. Faster. Stronger.

Artificial intelligence has inherited the same habit. Give an image generator a prompt such as “elite footballer” and it will often produce an athlete with enormous shoulders, perfectly defined muscles and a body-fat percentage that would make an actual medical team nervous.

AI does not merely recreate the athletic ideal. It turns the dial until the knob comes off.

Football Has Been Turning Players into Numbers for Years

Long before generative AI arrived, football was already reducing bodies to data.

A player is measured by height, weight, sprint speed and distance covered. Analysts count successful tackles, progressive carries and touches in the penalty area. Video games convert all of this into ratings that encourage endless arguments between supporters.

Should one player have 89 pace or 91? Is a centre-forward physically strong enough to hold off a defender? Has a midfielder lost two points of stamina since last season?

The numbers are useful. They help coaches understand performance and give supporters another way to compare players. But they also create an exaggerated version of sport in which every human quality appears measurable.

Anyone who plays football knows reality is messier.

A player can dominate without being the biggest man on the pitch. Someone with average sprint speed may appear fast because he starts moving earlier. A footballer can perform brilliantly for 80 minutes and then make one exhausted decision that changes the result.

The body matters, but it never tells the whole story.

AI-generated characters often miss that nuance. They take the most obvious visual signals of athleticism—muscles, height and symmetry—and treat them as proof of ability.

The fictional player looks magnificent. Whether he could control a wet ball under pressure is another question.

The Video-Game Version of an Athlete

Sports games have trained us to accept exaggerated bodies.

Characters must be readable immediately, particularly on a small screen or during fast action. The powerful player needs to look powerful. The agile player needs a recognisable silhouette. A villainous opponent may be broader, taller and almost comically intimidating.

Professional wrestling pushes this even further. Wrestlers are not presented only as competitors; they are characters. Their physique, clothing, entrance music and gestures all form part of the story.

Superhero films use the same language. A body does not simply belong to a person. It tells the audience who is strong, dangerous, disciplined or desirable before that character has spoken.

Generative AI is perfectly suited to this visual shorthand. It can create fictional athletes whose proportions sit somewhere between a Premier League player, a game avatar and a comic-book hero.

That can be entertaining. Nobody asks whether a dragon is anatomically realistic, so there is no reason every fictional athlete must look like someone completing an ordinary Sunday training session.

Problems begin when fantasy is mistaken for a reasonable standard.

When Physical Fantasy Becomes Adult Fantasy

Adult entertainment has always exaggerated bodies. AI simply gives the user direct control over the exaggeration.

Instead of searching for a performer who resembles a particular fantasy, adults can generate a fictional character and decide which features should be realistic and which should be deliberately impossible. Can AI Design a Convincing Footballer?

Creating a believable fictional athlete requires more than adding abdominal muscles and a football shirt.

Position should influence the body. A goalkeeper may have a longer frame and powerful reach. A central midfielder needs the compact balance of someone constantly changing direction. A winger’s physique may suggest speed without looking like a bodybuilder.

The details around the player matter too.

Are the socks stained from a sliding tackle? Is the shirt pulling unevenly after 70 minutes of movement? Does the expression show concentration rather than the frozen aggression common in synthetic sports images?

A convincing scene also needs a believable stadium. Advertising should not turn into random letters. Supporters should not merge into the seats. The ball must remain round, and the player’s boots should point in directions the ankles can realistically support.

AI is improving at these details, but busy match scenes remain difficult. Eleven players, a referee, moving limbs and a crowded background create many opportunities for visual mistakes.

Portraits are easier. Action is the real test.

Could AI Help with Match Predictions?

Image generation and predictive analysis are different branches of AI, even though both are often described with the same broad term.

A generator learns how visual elements tend to appear together and produces a new image. A prediction model studies structured information—recent form, home advantage, injuries, expected goals and other indicators—to estimate a likely result.

Neither possesses magical knowledge.

A model can identify patterns that a person may overlook, but football contains red cards, deflections, refereeing decisions and moments of individual brilliance. The best team does not win every match. That uncertainty is why people watch.

AI can support analysis by organising information quickly. It may highlight that a team performs poorly after European away matches or regularly concedes from set pieces. The final prediction still needs context.

The same caution applies to generated images. The output may look authoritative because it is polished. That does not make it anatomically accurate or representative of how athletes actually look.

Confidence is part of the presentation, not proof of truth.

Keep Real Players Out of Adult Generations

There is an obvious line that responsible users should not cross.

A public figure’s photographs are easy to find, but availability is not consent. Real footballers, coaches and supporters should never be placed into generated adult images without their explicit permission.

That includes face swaps, recognisable tattoos and prompts designed to reproduce a particular person while avoiding their name.

The better option is also the more creative one: build an entirely fictional adult character.

Sport Reminds Us That Bodies Are Tools, Not Scoreboards

Football supporters love ratings because they make complicated discussions feel simple. One player is an 87, another is an 84, and the debate appears settled.

Bodies do not work like that.

Height can be useful in one situation and inconvenient in another. Strength can win a duel but reduce agility. A physique shaped for sprinting is different from one built for endurance. There is no universal perfect athlete.

There is no universal perfect adult body either.

AI generators can create entertaining extremes, and adults are free to enjoy them as fiction. The danger lies in forgetting how deliberately unrealistic those images may be.

The best footballers are not assembled by moving every physical slider to maximum. They succeed because their abilities work together.

Fantasy can ignore that rule. Reality cannot.

So enjoy the impossible muscles, heroic proportions and characters who look as though they were designed for a game with the difficulty set to “ridiculous.” Just remember that the image is doing what sport has done for generations: taking a real human quality, exaggerating it and turning it into a story.

Bigger may look impressive on the screen.

On the pitch, timing still wins.
