Manchester United enter the new campaign in an unfamiliar position: defending a Champions League place rather than chasing one. A third-place finish on 71 points reset the conversation around Old Trafford entirely, and the summer's business has been about consolidation rather than reinvention, which is a large part of why United's football betting odds for another top-four finish sit considerably shorter than they did 12 months earlier. Ruben Amorim was dismissed in January 2026 after fewer than 14 months in charge, and former United player Michael Carrick was handed the reins on an interim basis following a short Darren Fletcher caretaker spell. He won 11 of his 16 matches to haul United into third, and was rewarded in May with a permanent two-year contract, with the option of a third year.

That continuity is the single most underrated factor in United's summer. For the first time in several windows, the squad has been assembled by and for the coach who will actually use it.

The signings: a midfield rebuild

United made four confirmed additions, spending in the region of £93m. Andrey Santos was the marquee arrival at a reported £50m from Chelsea, a young Brazilian central midfielder brought in for legs, ball progression and long-term value. Alongside him came Belgium captain Youri Tielemans for around £35m from Aston Villa, a Premier League-proven operator arriving from a side that finished fourth.

Winger Tynan Thompson joined from Tottenham for a reported £8m as a longer-term project, while experienced goalkeeper Karl Darlow arrived on a free from Leeds United to provide cover.

The pattern is unmistakable: roughly £85m of the outlay went into central midfield. That was demonstrably United's weakest department, and rather than spreading money thinly across the pitch, the club concentrated it on the area that most limited them. Santos offers energy and forward passing; Tielemans brings control, set-piece delivery and the composure of someone who has done it in this league for years.

The sales: wage relief more than income

The outgoings tell a different story. Rasmus Hojlund's £38m permanent move to Napoli after his loan there last season was the only significant fee received. Casemiro, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia all departed as free agents at the end of their contracts, with Altay Bayindir loaned to Celta Vigo. A cluster of fringe and academy players were also sold on: Radek Vitek to Middlesbrough, Tyler Fredericson to Lausanne-Sport, Ethan Ennis to Stockport County, Ethan Williams to Peterborough United and Sonny Aljofree to Rotherham United.

The net spend lands at approximately £55m. Crucially, the departures represent enormous wage-bill relief and the resolution of a long-running squad-management problem, even though they generated almost nothing in transfer income. Peripheral or declining players left; first-choice contributors did not.

Where the squad got thinner

The honest weakness is centre-forward. Hojlund's exit leaves Benjamin Sesko as the only established out-and-out striker, with Joshua Zirkzee having slipped behind Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha in the pecking order. Mbeumo and Cunha can both operate centrally, but both are natural wingers. One injury to Sesko and the depth simply is not obvious, the clearest unresolved question of the window.

Losing Casemiro also removes a senior dressing-room presence. Tielemans is the direct answer to that, and a considerably more mobile one.

Why top four remains realistic

Three arguments hold up. First, the baseline: United finished third, and the core of that squad is intact. Second, the improvement was targeted rather than scattered, the money going precisely where the problem was. Third, continuity: a settled head coach on a multi-year deal, working with players he chose, is exactly what United have most conspicuously lacked in recent years.

The counterweight is Champions League football returning to the schedule, which stretches squads and punishes thin positions. But top four is generally defended by teams with structure and a clear plan, and on that measure United look better equipped than they have for some time.
